The Consequences Of Tinnitus On The Sufferer

Tinnitus is usually reported as a condition in which a person hears noises where no corresponding external noise exists. Put another way, what the tinnitus sufferer perceives is only a sensation of sound.

The apparent source of the sound is frequently described as being the ear or ears and often just somewhere in the head. It may even appear to come from a point in space just outside the head. The defining point is that the sound can only be heard by the head tinnitus sufferer themselves.

What is less widely talked about is what the effects of tinnitus are.

Any effort to fully describe the impact of tinnitus on a sufferers life is doomed to fall short of the mark.

With no physical evidence to support the condition it is understandable that there will be those who dismiss it as something imagined or that it is indeed an indication of madness.

Living with an incessant noise within your head is at best distracting. A loud tinnitus can soon become a sufferers worst nightmare. Being forced to live with the sounds always there morning, noon and night and with no chance of relief can be completely unbearable.

Peace and quiet eludes the tinnitus sufferer to the extent that it becomes no more than a distant memory. That need for quiet cannot be turned into a reality however. Absurdly the quiet that is so needed becomes the upward volume control for tinnitus as it becomes the most assertive sound in a quieter environment. Any tinnitus that gets focused upon grows in volume. That formula drives a vicious downward spiraling effect.

For many the effect is to deny them any rest and sleep. It is during the quiet hours of the night that it can be at its worst. With tinnitus in ear keeping you awake and it being the only thing to focus on, the night can be very long indeed.

The stress, anxiety and eventual depression can have very telling consequences on the lives of the sufferer and those closest to him.

There can of course be a happier outcome than all this suggests. The effects of tinnitus can be turned down or even turned off. It does respond favourably to self-help measures.

The starting point for tinnitus liberation does begin in the mind. After the initial trauma recedes, the adoption of a positive attitude and a resolve to beat the effects will be the most important single weapon in your armoury. With this must be a willingness to have an open mind and to try new strategies. For the majority of sufferers the effects can be muted or with a bit of grit and determination they can even be snuffed out altogether.

Life can be very much better for those sufferers who refuse to accept the consequences of tinnitus as being permanent. But they do have to be prepared to take up the mantle and do something positive about it such as getting involved with a tinnitus reduction program!
