Of all the people with hearing loss problems some experience difficulty with hearing because they have interference due to noises inside the ear or head which drowns out external noises.
This is the condition known as tinnitus hearing loss, which is classified as one of the causes of hearing problems generally. It is described as noises that originate in the ear that are unwanted, like a heightend sensitivity or hyperacusis.
The noise in the head can be very painful. It can sound like a constantly annoying buzzing sound or can be as soft as the sound of a seashell held close to the ear. Or it can intrude as a high pitched piercing sound that is highly disturbing and prevents the sufferer from hearing anything else besides.
There are a few common types of tinnitus:
- Pulsating Tinnitus: This is when the tinnitus sounds come in waves that are continuous or are going in time with the heartbeat
- Tonal tinnitus: High frequency hearing loss, experienced as ringing, buzzing or whistling sounds, beeping or hissing noises.
- Objective tinnitus: Where the sounds are also heard by others outside and are not just internal noises
Tinnitus hearing loss may affect anyone but it is more common amongst the elderly. People who regularly work
or socialize in noisy environment are at a larger risk of developing tinnitus hearing loss in the long term. It is not commonly regarded as a really serious condition but it can gradually lead to hearing loss and for some the
condition is so bad that they suffer psychologically and may contemplate suicide as a means of escape from the
incessant noise.
Many people who have tinnitus are worried that they may eventually turn completely deaf.
The noises which are related to tinnitus are very loud inside the ear but only the affected individual can hear it.
The noises are described as being very loud and unpleasant. Although tinnitus can not be completely cured there are a
number of ways in which symptoms can be alleviated. The first thing advised would be to avoid fatigue and always have rest. Next, avoiding the use of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol are recommended as these may affect the nervous
system and worsen the condition. Sleeping in an elevated position with the head up is considerd helpful by some.
